  3. RoRo vs Container Cost Comparison

RoRo vs Container Car Shipping: Which Is Better? (2026)

The two most common ways to ship a car from China are RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) and container. Both are reliable; the right choice depends on the vehicle, the destination and your budget. Here is a practical comparison.

Cost

RoRo is usually the cheaper option for a single running vehicle, because you pay only for the deck space the car occupies. A container costs more per car but becomes economical when you ship two to four cars in one 40HQ, or when you add spare parts and personal effects inside. Get both quoted for your specific lane — the gap is often smaller than expected.

Transit time

On most lanes (China to West Africa, Middle East, Europe) both methods sail on similar schedules: roughly 25–45 days. RoRo sailings can be less frequent on some routes; container space is usually available weekly.

Protection

A container shields the vehicle from salt spray, weather and handling damage, and is the safer choice for high-value, classic or modified cars. RoRo vehicles sit on an open deck and are exposed; they must be emptied of personal effects and have the alarm disabled.

Non-running vehicles

Only a container can carry a non-running vehicle — RoRo requires the car to drive on and off under its own power. If the engine does not run, container is your only option (and it may need a winch loading charge).

Spare parts and personal effects

Containers allow you to load spare parts, tyres and (where permitted) personal effects alongside the car, subject to customs rules at destination. RoRo does not allow anything inside the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Is RoRo always cheaper than container?

For a single running vehicle, usually yes. For two or more cars, or when spare parts are included, container often wins. Always compare both quotes for your lane.

Can I put personal items in a RoRo car?

No. RoRo requires an empty vehicle. Use a container if you need to ship parts or effects alongside the car.

Which is safer?

Container offers more protection from weather and handling. RoRo is safe but exposes the vehicle to the elements; remove valuables and disable the alarm.
