Prototype electric bus, Dalian to Jeddah, shipped with battery compliance
UN3171 classification, UN38.3 test summary and MSDS supplied, state of charge within the carrier limit. Anonymised case study from our Middle East trade.
What the shipment involved
A prototype electric bus was going to Jeddah for demonstration. Prototype status meant the paperwork was not the standard series-production set, and the battery made it a dangerous-goods-considered booking.
The buyer needed the classification, the test documentation and the state of charge settled before the booking, not at the gate.
Why Container, battery secured was chosen
- A battery-powered vehicle is classified for transport under UN3171 and needs UN38.3 and an MSDS on file
- Container carriage kept the prototype sealed and off an open deck
- Carrier acceptance depends on the state of charge at loading, so it was agreed in advance
How it was handled
- Battery data, UN38.3 test summary and MSDS collected from the manufacturer
- UN3171 classification confirmed with the carrier and declared on the booking
- State of charge set within the carrier limit before the unit reached the terminal
- Bus loaded and secured in the container, battery isolated as required
- Documentation set issued with the bill of lading draft for approval
From the operation

Photographs are of comparable operations at the same loading ports. Client-identifying detail is not published.
Result and what it tells you
The bus was accepted by the carrier without a last-minute hold, which is the usual failure point for prototype battery vehicles.
The practical rule: for any electrified vehicle, the test summary and MSDS are the gate to the booking. Without them the cargo is not refused politely — it simply does not get on the vessel.
